Sustainability and American Manufacturing: A Perfect Partnership

American manufacturing of today is not only less expensive and higher quality—it’s also more sustainable. As manufacturers reshore and companies who were always American-made only get better and better, all are placing greater emphasis on sustainability efforts, and it’s proving to be successful. Manufacturers are becoming more aware of their responsibility to the planet, and the need to conduct sustainable practices is increasing as a result.

Sustainability in manufacturing, as defined by the National Council for Advanced Manufacturing (NACFAM), is described as: meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs; and the creation of products using non-polluting, energy-conserving processes, that are safe for people and the environment.

The benefits seen are plentiful. This article states that “the job-creation effects of energy efficiency” are well documented. Other benefits include significant cost savings due to decreased energy use, and increased business as consumers and clients see a company as acting responsibly. It’s a win/win.

It’s also been pointed out that choosing to manufacture in America is the sustainable choice. “U.S. manufacturers are the world’s most energy efficient,” according to NAM’s Director of Energy and Resource Policy.

While every month is a good month to focus on this, April is a great time to recognize and appreciate it, in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrate around the world, and is dedicated to promoting and encouraging earth-friendly policies and practices. Sustainable manufacturing is a huge part of this, and has come such a long way since Earth Day’s beginnings.

On Earth Day, and every day, if each manufacturer takes one small step toward greater sustainability, the industry, the country, and the planet can reap the rewards.
